Tips When Athletic-wear Is Your Everyday-wear

by Catriona

My sister, being a full-time dancer, requested my styling thoughts on athletic-wear as everyday-wear. If you're a stay-at-home mom, a personal trainer, a professional dancer, a full-time dog walker, you may frequently find yourself in such non-structured apparel as yoga pants, wicking tops, and fitted spandex/cotton half-zips. While I fully support your decision to don athletic-wear on a regular basis, it must fit certain criteria. Avoid looking like a shlub in your comfy-wear by following these rules:

1. No Sweatpants/Sweatshirts--these two articles of clothing are synonymous with laziness and looking sloppy. They also make you look bigger. If you're going to do athletic-wear as day-wear, invest in well-fitted, high-quality pieces.
2. Proper Sizing--your pants should not be riding up your butt, nor should the crotch be hanging halfway down your thighs.
3. Proper Hem Length--your full-length pants should come 1/4" above the ground when wearing shoes. Your shorts should go no lower than the middle of your knee and no higher than the tips of your fingers with your arms at your sides.
4. Pair on Purpose--avoid aimlessly tossing on any shirt, pants, and sweatshirt without regard for the colors and patterns you're pairing together. It's quite easy to look like a neon light show in athletic apparel these days. Which brings me to my next rule.
5. One Statement Piece--opt for one eye-catching color/pattern in your ensemble. For example, go for a solid, and basic, colored bottom when wearing that pink and purple tie-dye stretch top.
6. No Chunky Sneakers--traditional sneakers are bulky, but paired with tight fitting yoga pants or leggings, they're absolutely enormous. Go for the minimalist sneaker or some slip-ons (my favorites are Brooks's Pureflow).
7. Wear A Third Piece--wearing a zip-up hoodie, a half-zip pullover, or an open sweater over your top will pull your appearance together and greatly diminish that slacker vibe that athletic apparel often gives.
8. Show Your Personality--don't forget to put a little you in there amongst all that spandex and cotton. Wear a scarf, a fun headband, some string bracelets or thin bangles.
