10 Tips for Styling Your Hips
by Catriona Whitehead
I have always had an impressive ratio of hips/tush to waist, similar to the shape of a pear or hourglass. Figuring out how to flatter such a shape led to an entire career of styling others, as well as myself.

1. Draw the eye to the smallest part of your waist using the following methods.

2. Go for an a-line skirt or dress--it will provide room for you derriere and lead the eye to your waist. Wrap dresses are awesome because you can make the waistband as tight as necessary and still have room for your tush.

3. A pointed-toe shoe, preferably pumps, will elongate your legs.

4. Embellished/loud tops balance the curve of your hip and move the eye upwards.
5. If you prefer pants, select a slim straight leg or a high-waisted flare/wide leg. Unlike a leg that tapers in towards the ankle, a straight leg or flare will create balance with the hip. HOWEVER, you must wear the wide leg and flare pant with pumps, or at the very least a pointed-toe flat.

6. The hem length makes a big difference.

7. I recommend fitted or tailored tops for pear and hourglass shapes. A looser top makes you look as wide as your widest point--your hips. Beware hourglasses, the higher the neckline, the larger your bust will appear.

8. A well-fitted blazer or jacket looks well on every shape. The structure and tailored lines are especially helpful for flattering a prominent bottom half.

9. Statement necklaces or earrings, like an embellished top, draw the eye upwards.

10. Size up and tailor down. I cannot stress this enough. Those hip-hugging styles, like pencil skirts and skinny jeans, work for pears and hourglasses too. Select the size that lays nicely across your hips and tush and then visit the tailor to have the waistband nipped in.
